Overwatch 2 Season 20 is now live, and it's one of the most substantial updates of 2025. The patch introduces a new DPS hero, Vendetta, revamps the console aim assist system, brings back the Winter Wonderland event, and overhauls the competitive ladder with the new Challenger Tier. With so many changes, players have plenty to explore.

⚔️ New DPS Hero: Vendetta

The headline addition is Vendetta, a sword-wielding DPS hero who quickly became a fan favorite during her limited trial. Described as highly mobile with a high skill gap, Vendetta rewards players who master her nuances. Her abilities include:

  • Palatine Fang – Primary weapon

  • Warding Stance – Defensive stance

  • Soaring Slice – Mobility tool

  • Whirlwind Dash – Dash attack

  • Projected Edge – Ranged projectile

  • Onslaught (Passive) – Passive ability

  • Sundering Blade – Ultimate

Blizzard has already fixed several bugs related to Vendetta, such as an issue that allowed multiple concurrent overhead swings and a missing VFX when reaching maximum Onslaught stacks.

🎮 Console Aim Assist Buff

Console players will notice a significant improvement to aim assist. The strength has been increased by 7% overall, with adjustments ranging from 6% to 8% depending on target distance. Support heroes receive the biggest boost, but all classes benefit. According to Blizzard, Overwatch has historically used a lower aim assist percentage compared to other FPS titles, so this change aims to make the game more accessible for beginners without making it overpowered.

New sensitivity options include:

  • Extra Horizontal Sensitivity at Max Deadzone

  • Extra Vertical Sensitivity at Max Deadzone

  • Extra Sensitivity Ramp-up delay (0–1 second)

  • Extra Sensitivity Ramp-up time (0–1 second)

  • Disable Aim Assist at Max Deadzone

Friendly aim assist has also been adjusted for Ana, Juno, and Illari, with a new health threshold option and default strength set to 100%. Additionally, aim assist ease-in settings can now be tweaked per hero type (projectile, hitscan, melee).

❄️ Winter Wonderland Returns

The annual Winter Wonderland event runs from December 9 to January 7, 2026. It brings a winter version of Prop Hunt as a limited-time mode, along with a new three-path reward system. Players can choose which prizes to unlock, with each track ending in a festive skin: Jingle Tracer, Krampus Junkrat, or Santa Claus Torbjorn.

The event also features two weeks of Mischief & Magic (December 9–22) on a winter-themed King's Row, followed by Mischief & Magic Wonderland (December 23–January 5) where props can defend themselves. Complete challenges to collect cookies and earn rewards.

🏆 Competitive Overhaul: Challenger Tier

Top 500 has been upgraded to the Challenger Tier. The leaderboard is now organized by Challenger Score, which is earned by winning matches at Diamond 5 or above in Core Competitive play, or All-Star 5 or above in Stadium. The exact score depends on the highest-ranked player in each match. Losses subtract 33% of the score a player would gain at their rank.

Challenger Score resets each season and gains a 5% Heat Bonus for each consecutive week. For example, at the end of a 9-week season, a win is worth 40% more score. Players can link their social channels directly from the leaderboard, and live streamers are highlighted in red.

Requirements to appear on the leaderboard have changed: no minimum win count, no time delay, and each leaderboard has a Challenger Score requirement (e.g., 5000 for Combined, Open Queue, and Stadium; 4000 for each role in Core 5v5 and Stadium). Endorsement Level 2 is required.

Tier/Division Challenger Score (Core)
Diamond 5 30
Master 5 42
Grandmaster 5 70
Champion 5 152
Champion 1 248

Stadium also gets Challenger Tier support, with its own score payouts (e.g., All-Star 5 – 85, Legend 1 – 295).

🗺️ Map Removal and Cheater Compensation

Antarctic Peninsula has been disabled for two seasons as the team works on a rework. It will return in Season 22. In the meantime, players can look forward to changes.

A new cheater compensation system is being introduced. In Core Competitive modes, players will periodically receive Rank Progress returned from matches where a cheater was found. A pop-up will notify players when this happens. The system will be calibrated behind the scenes before fully coming online later in Season 20. Importantly, Rank Progress is not subtracted if you won with a cheater on your team.

⚖️ Hero Balance and Stadium Updates

Season 20 includes extensive balance changes. Some highlights:

  • Doomfist – Jagged Wall knockback damage increased from 40 to 50; health increased from 350 to 400.

  • Sojourn – Take Aim direct hit damage reduced from 40 to 30; explosion damage reduced from 90 to 80.

  • Cassidy – New powers and items in Stadium, including Full House, Bang Bang, and Buck Wild.

  • Wuyang – New legendary hero items like Oscillation Orb and Tidefill Basin.

  • Hazard – Bonerot and Twin Fang powers buffed.

  • Orisa – Restortify adjusted to find a sweet spot.

  • Winston – Circuit Breaker and Electro Cluster powers adjusted to make him less threatening overall.

  • Genji – Several items and powers adjusted, including Swift-Loader and Slicy Coolant.

General items in Stadium have also been tweaked, with some vertical Ability Power items reduced to encourage diverse builds. Counter options against Doomfist have been beefed up.

🛠️ General Fixes

Blizzard fixed several issues, including FPS drops during backfill, incorrect move speed display in the Advanced Info Panel, and controller navigation problems on the hero select screen. Hero-specific fixes include Vendetta's overhead swing bugs and Projected Edge not piercing breakables.

Season 20 is packed with content, and players have until January 7 to enjoy Winter Wonderland. For those looking to climb, the Challenger Tier offers a new challenge. With Vendetta joining the roster and aim assist improvements, the game feels fresh for both casual and competitive players.
